A classic Italian dessert

Affogato is a classic Italian coffee dessert consisting of ice cream and coffee. It tastes so good that it’s hard to believe it only consists of two ingredients. Conversely, it is precisely characteristic of Italian cuisine that the dishes should be simple, consist of good ingredients, and then the food should probably taste excellent.

The Italian word “affogato” means to drown, and that is exactly what you do when making an affogato dessert. A cold scoop of ice cream in a chilled glass is flooded and drowned in hot espresso coffee , creating a fantastic and delicious ice cream on top and an ice cold bite on the bottom. An exquisite pleasure here in the summer heat. You just have to try it!

Coffee with vanilla ice cream – or what?

Traditionally, affogato is made on vanilla ice cream and a shot of espresso, and since Italians are a traditional people, and many Italian chefs and housewives cherish the classic recipes with life and soul, be careful to change “the real recipe” .

But! We believe, however, that you can put your own personal touch on the ice cream dessert, and if you prefer pistachio ice cream over vanilla ice cream, then go for it. However, the chosen ice cream should preferably have a good portion of fatness so stay away from sorbet.

Ingredients for one affogato:

  • 1 shot espresso (can be coffee capsule)
  • 1 scoop of ice cream of your choice
  • Slightly grated dark chocolate

Course of action

  1. Form a scoop of ice cream and try to make it as round as you can, then place it in a glass of suitable size. The affogato is a simple dessert, so it looks best if the ingredients are neatly arranged.
  2. Make the perfect shot of espresso or an espresso coffee capsule in a small jug (preferably with a spout so you can pour nicely), and pour it around the ice in the glass.
  3. Serve with a spoon and a little grated dark chocolate on top.

Vegansk affogato

Almond affogato (vegan and lactose free)

With vegan ice cream, a shot of almond milk, a little chopped almonds and a sprinkle of cinnamon, you can transform your affogato into a delicious vegan almond version. It gets a little more like a milkshake with the extra moisture, which, if you are into it, is really delicious.

Ingredients for one almond affogato:

  • 1 shot espresso (can be coffee capsule)
  • 1 vegan scoop of ice cream of your choice
  • 25 ml almond milk
  • 1 teaspoon chopped almonds
  • ½ teaspoon cinnamon

Course of action

Pour almond milk into a glass of suitable size. Place the selected vegan ice cream in the milk.

Brew a shot of espresso or a coffee capsule and pour the coffee around the ice cream.

Sprinkle chopped almonds and a little cinnamon on top and serve the glory. You can advantageously let the ice cream, coffee and almond milk melt together and drink the dessert like a milkshake.

Which coffee should I choose?

So far, we have replaced the vanilla ice cream with an optional scoop. Then we put almond milk in the affogato. And now we then knock the last nail in the coffin and a knife in the back on the traditional Italian recipe. We replace the espresso with quite ordinary filter coffee. Because of course you can use just the coffee you want in your affogato.

Espresso coffee has the strength to taste through ice cream and milk, but if you prefer a more subdued coffee taste, you can use just the coffee you crave. Even we prefer a full-bodied coffee that contains sweetness from nuts and chocolate. As you know, nuts, chocolate and ice cream are a match made in heaven, and that combination therefore never fails.
