Backflush is another word that sounds advanced, but makes good sense for you to get acquainted with. In fact, it’s a method you use when you get to the more tedious but necessary part of brewing: cleaning.

What is backflush?

Backflush is a method you use when cleaning semi-automatic espresso machines that have a three-way valve.

You need a blind filter. That is, a filter without holes. In it you place a spoonful of espresso filter cleaner, and you fire up the machine with a shot. The water is blocked by the blind filter, sending water back to the espresso machine. It makes sure your cleaning gets around well throughout the machine. It’s very roughly explained, but we recommend that you clean your machine once a month – the backflush way.
